FIDE World Chess Champion from 2002 to 2004. He won the Ukrainian

This game probably can be a good example how you can react and play in
unknown situations. Diese Partie kann wahrscheinlich ein gutes Beispiel
dafür sein, wie man in unbekannten Situationen reagieren
und spielen kann. 1.e4 e5 I spent so much time in the morning guessing
what my opponent can play which even included lots of games from Title
Tuesday tournament with 1.a4 or 1...h5 :) But in the end it seems was
more important to save some energy and have a clear mind. Ich
verbrachte so viel Zeit am Morgen damit, zu erraten, was mein Gegner
spielen kÃnnte, was sogar viele Partien aus dem
Title-Tuesday-Turnier mit 1.a4 oder 1...h5 beinhaltete :) Aber am Ende
war es wohl wichtiger, etwas Energie zu sparen und einen klaren Kopf zu
haben. 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Well, recently I played Ruy Lopez, Italian game
and even Scotch here with white. I was not so sure what can be best and
what my opponent can expect from me. Over the board at the last moment
I decided to play Italian, because it was not exactly what I played
last time against 1...e5 and it´s still a solid opening
where you can have a long game. Nun, vor kurzem habe ich Spanisch,
Italienisch und sogar Schottisch mit WeiÃY gespielt. Ich war mir
nicht so sicher, was das Beste sein kÃnnte und was mein Gegner
von mir erwarten kann. Im letzten Moment entschied ich mich,
Italienisch zu spielen, weil es nicht genau das war, was ich letztes
Mal gegen 1...e5 gespielt hatte, und es ist immer noch eine solide
ErÃffnung, in der man eine lange Partie haben kann. 3...d6!? I
wouldn´t say that this move was absolutely new for me. But
it´s very rarely played compared to 3...Bc5 or 3...Nf6. So
I started to think what to do over the board after just 3 moves! [#]
Ich würde nicht sagen, dass dieser Zug absolut neu
für mich war. Aber er wird sehr selten gespielt,
verglichen mit 3...Lc5 oder 3...Sf6. Also begann ich nach nur 3
Zügen zu überlegen, was ich am Brett tun

Zug 3...Be7 which from the old Soviet books I remember for some reason
was called Hungarian Defence. But with 3...d6 black has some additional

wurde. Aber mit 3...d6 hat Schwarz einige zusätzliche
Ideen.] 4.Nc3 After some thought I decided that some simple development
will not hurt my position. After all I am playing with white! Nach

Stellung nicht schaden würde. Immerhin spiele ich mit Weiß!
[My only knowledge basically at this pont was: many years ago I was
reading an article about Russian Superfinal with some annotated games.
White played Mein einziges Wissen zu diesem Punkt war: Vor vielen
Jahren las ich einen Artikel über das Russische
Superfinale mit einigen kommentierten Partien. WeiÃY spielte
4.c3 to prepare d2-d4. I guess it´s a natural reaction
like we play against 3...Bc5 or some Ruy Lopez. But black reacted with
the unorthodox um d2-d4 vorzubereiten. Ich denke, es ist eine
natürliche Reaktion, wie wir sie gegen 3...Lc5 oder
Spanisch spielen. Aber Schwarz reagierte mit dem unorthodoxen 4...f5!?
as I undestood was an idea of Leela Chess Zero which attracted D.Dubov
and D. Paravian who have an original playing style. war, wie ich
verstanden habe, eine Idee von Leela Chess Zero ist, die D. Dubov und
D. Paravian angezogen hat, die einen originellen Spielstil haben. 5.d3
Qf6!? another move against basic rules: I was taught in childhood not

thought a might be a bit tto much since I haven't even castled short

and white gets some extra space and the black Bg6 is potentionally out

moment I thought that position is very similar to a Philidor Defence,
where black has Nc6 instead of Nbd7. So I thought maybe I can play in a
similar way with white here as well. In diesem Moment dachte ich, dass
diese Stellung einer Philidor-Verteidigung sehr ähnlich
ist, in der Schwarz Sc6 statt Sbd7 hat. Also dachte ich, vielleicht
kann ich auch hier mit WeiÃY auf ähnliche Weise

quite happy with it. I thought that now I have a good version of the
Philidor Defence with some extra tempos since black played Nc6-b8-d7
instead of Nbd7 in one move Dieser Zug sieht natürlich

point of view it was better to play in King´s Indian style

Schwäche für WeiÃY sein. Ja, es
sieht ein bisschen zu langsam aus. Aber die Stellung hat einen
geschlossenen Charakter und WeiÃY muss immer noch kreativ sein,
um den Raumvorteil am Damenflügel zu nutzen. Dies ist

resources to keep control over the d5 square. Look also how
economically each move was played before: white didn´t

because it´s not so easy for black to create an active
counterplay. But still there is lots of play ahead Ich mag Weiß
hier, weil es für Schwarz nicht so einfach ist, ein aktives
Gegenspiel zu entwickeln. Aber es liegt noch viel Spiel vor uns] 12.Qd3
Ra6?! Following the wrong plan. I understood that my opponent wanted to
take on b6 with a rook instead of the queen. But such an idea is very

rook fängt den Turm] 15.Nxd5 [For a while I thought

my position. Now it looks like Philidor pawn structure transformed to
some Sicilian Sveshnikov variation. My main concern was not to waste
time and not let my advantage slip away. Ich war sehr zufrieden mit
meiner Stellung. Jetzt sieht es so aus, als hätte sich
die Philidor-Bauernstruktur in eine sizilianische Sweschnikow-Variante
verwandelt. Mein Hauptanliegen war es, keine Zeit zu verlieren und
meinen Vorteil nicht zu verspielen. [My first natural instinct was to

20.cxb4 f5 21.b5 Ra7 22.exf5 Bxf5 23.Qa3 The white Bd5 is just a
monster here. It helps to push pawns on the queenside, and at the same
moment I can use it quickly for the defence of my own king if needed
Der weiÃYe Bd5 ist hier einfach ein Monster. Er hilft, Bauern am
Damenflügel vorzuschieben, und gleichzeitig kann ich ihn

the board, my opponent decided that he had enough torture in this game!
Very simple, but at the same moment effective play for white, wasn't
it? [Und bei immer noch gleichem Material auf dem Brett entschied mein
Gegner, dass er in dieser Partie genug Qualen ertragen hatte! Sehr
einfaches, aber gleichzeitig effektives Spiel für
WeiÃY, nicht wahr? 1-0.
