[A06]
Tata Steel-A 86th Wijk aan Zee (13), 28.01.2024
[Giri,Anish]
1.Nf3 d5 2.e3 No theory! Max is too good a theoretician to risk an
opening battle against, in such a crucial game. Keine Theorie!
2...Nf6 3.b3 e6 4.Bb2 Bd6 A
reasonable setup, one of many. Eine sinnvolle Aufstellung, eine von
vielen. 5.c4 0-0 6.Nc3 c5 7.g4!? I beat Lenier Dominguez back in 2016,
in a variation that arises after the more central and standard 7.cxd5
exd5 8.d4, but for this game I felt the frisky 7.g4!? move would be
more apt.
7...Nc6 8.g5
Ne4 Max responded reasonably quickly, which made me wonder whether he
would somehow know this random variation. It turned out that he had
indeed seen it before, but fortunately it was all quite vague for him
on the details.
ihn recht vage. 9.h4 A critical position. Fortunately my opponent sank
into deep thought. Eine kritische Position. Glücklicherweise
versank mein Gegner in tiefe Gedanken. 9...Re8? Black indeed can make a
useful waiting move here, besides the direct options, but this is a
very dubious one, since the rook is often very useful on the f-file for
f5 purposes.
10.Qc2! I should have frankly played this instantly,
but I tried to find Black's point and started seeing some Nxc3 dxc3 d4
ideas. Seeing that wasn't helpful at all.
10...Nxc3 [10...Nb4 is well met with wird gut
beantwortet mit 11.Qb1! when the e4 knight is still under attack. ,
is a thematic capture, Dies ist ein thematisches
Zurückschlagen, [as denn 11.Bxc3 e5! 12.cxd5 Nd4! would
actually justify Black's Re8 fully. würde eigentlich
Schwarz' Te8 vollständig rechtfertigen.] 11...g6 At some
point I realized that 11...d4 12.Bd3 g6 13.h5 is just crushing, so this
move appeared clever to me. In fact it was played out of desperation,
at this point. The move 9...Re8? just didn't work out at all for Black.
Irgendwann wurde mir klar, dass 11...d4 12.Ld3 g6 13.h5 einfach
erdrückend ist, also erschien mir dieser Zug clever. In
[11...d4 12.Bd3 g6 13.h5] 12.h5? I
somehow managed to convince myself that 12.0-0-0 d4! is not as clean
and decided to start with h5, to have Bd3 after d4, threatening a
sacrifice on g6. I had massively underestimated the move in the game.
[12.0-0-0 d4 is really just far too
desperate. White can proceed with the attack slowly- h5, Bd3 - but can
also just pick up the pawn. ist wirklich viel zu verzweifelt.
Now Black is quite a bit
back in the game. Jetzt ist Schwarz ein ganzes Stück zurück
im Spiel. 13.Nxe5 Bxe5 To my disappointment I realized that all the
tempting options are far from clear, as Black's position is more robust
than I expected.
14.0-0-0 Bg7
At some point I realized that it's just not clear at all and I decided
to just play quickly without trying to keep any sort of control over
the proceedings.
15.f4 I was
hoping something would come up after 15...e5, but it didn't.
[15.h6 Bh8 16.f4 I didn't have the patience for this kind of
game on that day.
für diese Art von Partie.;
15.Bd3!? I tried making this work, but I just wasn't able to. Still, it
was actually a good way to proceed.
15...Qxg5 16.Rdg1 Qf6
17.hxg6 hxg6 18.Bxg6 fxg6 19.Rxg6 Qf5 This was a big bummer. The line
continues though. Das war ein großer Schock. Die Variante geht
aber weiter. 20.Qxf5 exf5 21.Rhg1 Re7 22.cxd5 I misjudged this
position. It did feel very good for White, but I wasn't at all sure it
would work out, as the queens are already gone and White still is some
material down. Still, compared to what I got, this was a better
attempt, as Black is objectively in some danger. I think I missed that
after Ich habe diese Stellung falsch eingeschätzt.
ich nach 22...Kh7 23.R6g2 Bd7 I can go zuerst 24.Rh2+! first and only
after spielen kann und erst nach 24...Kg8 25.c4! when Black loses
material.
Black does have a better defense, for example 23...a5!? or 22...Kf8!?,
but still White seems to be on top. wonach Schwarz Material verliert.
15...e5! 16.hxg6 After a while I realized that I just don't find
anything convincing at all and decided to just make moves and see what
comes.
kommt. [16.cxd5 was my original intention and it would have been
besser gewesen. 16...exf4 17.exf4 Qd6 This is a better way to play,
apparently, as the exchange sac after 17...Bg4 seems quite promising
for White after all.
(17...Bg4 18.Bb5 I
wasn't convinced by this exchange sac at all, but it's actually quite
good for White, especially if I keep the h-pawns and go h6 later.
18...Bxd1 19.Rxd1) 18.Qf2
Bg4 Black has quite some counterplay here. Schwarz hat hier einiges an
Gegenspiel.] 16...hxg6 17.Bd3?! It's a poor move objectively, but
nothing worked and at least here I was hoping for some Bxg6 miracles.
17...exf4! Strong intermezzo. Of course now Bxg6 doesn't work at all,
so I have to recapture first. Starkes Intermezzo.
Natürlich funktioniert jetzt Lxg6
überhaupt nicht mehr, also muss ich erst
zurückschlagen. 18.exf4 Qc7?! After this I came back to
life somewhat, though still the position was far from what I had hoped
it would be.
mir erhofft hatte. [18...Bg4! We were both just making moves at this
point, I guess, but Black needed to calculate just a little bit, to get
a great position.
19.Rdg1 and here a
very powerful intermezzo is key- und hier ist ein sehr kraftvolles
Intermezzo der Schlüssel. 19...dxc4! Now Jetzt scheitert 20.Bxg6
(20.Bxc4 Bf5!) fails to an 20...Re2! while Bxc4 is just sad, after Bf5!
Black cements the kingside. White's best bet was to beg for equality
after 19.Rde1. Very sad. während Lxc4 einfach traurig
ist, nach Lf5! zementiert Schwarz den
KÃnigsflügel. Die beste MÃglichkeit
für WeiÃY war, nach 19.Tde1 um Ausgleichzu
betteln. Sehr traurig.] 19.Rh4!? I initially missed some defensive
resources Black has after the bishop sac, but I can't say that there
was a clearly better option at this point, though I could of course
just take on d5, give up f4 pawn and play. Anfangs
19...dxc4 20.Bxg6! The point. Der Punkt.
20...fxg6 21.Qxg6 Kf8?! I was really surprised to see this, since I
thought that by this point Black would be forced to find 21...Qc6!
after which I wasn't even sure if I have enough for equality, as I
started delving into the move deeper.
erforschen. [21...Qc6! originally I had only seen some cheapos like
21...Qf7 22.Rh8+! and 21...Qe7 after which I planned 22.f5! when the
rook from h4 nicely guards the e4 square.
e4 gut bewacht. 22.Qh7+ Kf7! Now first of all f5 is met with Rh8!.
Jetzt wird vor allem f5 mit Rh8! beantwortet. 23.Rh6 (23.f5 Rh8!)
23...Re6! Black can just defend here. I was frantically looking for a
follow up here, realizing that I am essentially playing without the b2
bishop, when suddenly my opponent pleasantly surprised me with
21...Kf8?!.
24.Rxe6! Qxe6 25.Rd8 Ke7
26.Rd2 Kf7 27.Rd8;
21...Qf7 22.Rh8+!;
21...Qe7 22.f5!] 22.f5! Now White is in control again, though whether
there are enough resources to win, was still a question.
22...Qf7 23.Qd6+ Kg8? I actually
started growing into this 21...Kf8 move, as I had realized that Max
wants to trade queens and simplify. However, here he goes wrong,
keeping the queens on the board, after which the defense is way harder.
[23...Qe7!
24.Qxe7+ Kxe7! This is the way to go. Das ist der richtige Weg. 25.f6+
There is no way to get anything more here. Es gibt keine
MÃglichkeit, hier etwas mehr zu bekommen. (For example Zum
Beispiel 25.Rh7 Bxf5 26.Rxg7+ Kf8 followed by Re2 with the usual
counterplay. gefolgt von Te2 mit dem üblichen
Gegenspiel.) 25...Bxf6 26.gxf6+ Kxf6 27.Rxc4 Bf5! This idea is key,
Black need to quickly get Bf5-Re2 counterplay and not waste time
counting pawns.
28.Rxc5 Re2 And Black
should hold this. Und Schwarz sollte das halten.] 24.f6 Now the
defensive task was really hard. Of course I still play without the b2
bishop, but Black king is extremely exposed and the h-file is there.
expecting this as well. Das hatte ich auch erwartet. [24...Bf5! This
apparently was the best move, but at this point it was all just very
hard for Black to understand.
verstehen.] 25.Qf4! Now I get to keep the queens. Jetzt kann ich die
Damen behalten. 25...Qf5? After this I thought Black may just be lost
and indeed it may well be the case.
[25...Bf5! Apparently still holds somehow. Anscheinend
hält das immer noch irgendwie. 26.Qxc4+ Re6 27.fxg7
Rae8! Black is okay here according to the proper computer. Schwarz ist
hier okay, laut dem korrekten Computer.] 26.Qg3! Be6?! Black had to try
26...Re5, though I thought that was losing.
[26...Re5 27.Rd8+ I thought this was a forced win, but it seems it may
not be the best.
(27.fxg7!? leads to an endgame
which is close to winning. führt zu einem Endspiel, das dem Sieg
nahe ist. 27...Qxg5+ 28.Qxg5 Rxg5 29.Rxc4 Kxg7 30.Rf4 And here Black is
close to lost, as the king is in a massive danger of just getting
checkmated. Black generally needs a Bf5-Re2 kind of counterplay to
survive this and here he is just not in time it seems.
28.fxg7 Here I calculated that Qxg5 loses, as the c8 bishop falls in
the end, but Black apparently can continue the defense with the cold
blooded capture.
Schlagen. 28...Kxg7! and White doesn't have a direct win here.
Bf7 a reasonable attempt at regrouping, but Black is not in time. ein
vernünftiger Versuch, sich neu zu formieren, aber
Schwarz kommt nicht rechtzeitig. . 28.Rf4! This breaks the harmony in
Black's ranks.
Schwarz. 28...Qe6 Now the position is ripe for a forced finish. Jetzt
29.Qh2!
I was about to settle on 29.g6!? which sort of wins by force as well,
but then I spotted an even more forcing sequence. Generally when it's
time to convert, the more forcing the better.
29...Kxg7 30.Rxf7+!? This is
a pretty idea, especially since the next move may not be so easy to
spot. Fortunately I had more than enough time at this point.
30...Qxf7 31.g6! Black
is losing material by force. Schwarz verliert forciert Material.
31...Qe6 32.Rd7+! And all the variations work out for White in the end.
Und am Ende funktonieren alle Varianten für
WeiÃY. 1-0.
