1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 Pragg has experiment with the King's Indian here and there, so this didn't come as a shock, especially considering the tournament situation, where a win would likely help Pragg catch up with Aravindh. Pragg hat schon das eine oder andere Mal mit Königsindisch experimentiert, daher kam dies nicht überraschend, besonders in Anbetracht der Turniersituation, in der Pragg mit einem Sieg wahrscheinlich zu Aravindh aufschließen könnte. 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 0-0 6.Nf3 e5 7.0-0 exd4 I was actually expecting some other system here, since Pragg has played exd4 before and if White is booked up here, it is hard to generate winning chances. He did have a surprise later on prepared, but I was on top of it, somehow. Ich hatte hier eigentlich ein anderes System erwartet, da Pragg schon einmal exd4 gespielt hat und es schwer ist, Gewinnchancen zu generieren, wenn WeiÃY hier im Buch bleibt. Er hatte später eine Ãoberraschung parat, aber ich hatte es irgendwie im Griff. 8.Nxd4 Re8 9.f3 c6 10.Kh1 Nbd7!? Not a shocker either. The main-move d5 leads to some wild variations, but White has plenty of ways to attain a safe position. In a situation where you look for winning chances, delaying the simplifications makes a lot of sense. Auch kein Schocker. Der Hauptzug d5 führt zu einigen wilden Varianten, aber WeiÃY hat viele MÃglichkeiten, eine sichere Stellung zu erreichen. In einer Situation, in der man nach Gewinnchancen sucht, ist es sehr sinnvoll, die Vereinfachungen hinauszuzÃgern. [10...d5 11.cxd5 cxd5 12.Bg5 Nc6 Ding-Pragg, Sinquefield Cup 2024 Ding-Pragg, Sinquefield Cup 2024] 11.Be3!? The most obvious and the most popular move is 11.Bg5, but this somewhat naive looking move, developing the bishop to what is generally the most harmonious square, on e3 is also quite interesting. I first saw it played in a game Kramnik-Ponomariov in Dortmund 2011, a tournament I was a part of. Pragg was around 6 years of age at the time, according to my calculations! Der offensichtlichste und beliebteste Zug ist 11.Lg5, aber auch dieser etwas naiv wirkende Zug, bei dem der Läufer auf das allgemein harmonischste Feld auf e3 entwickelt wird, ist recht interessant. Ich sah ihn zum ersten Mal in einer Partie Kramnik-Ponomariov in Dortmund 2011, einem Turnier, an dem ich teilnahm. Pragg war damals etwa 6 Jahre alt, wenn ich richtig gerechnet habe! 11...a6 The tempting 11...d5 is not as unpleasant for White as it seems at first, because after cxd5 cxd5 there is the nasty Ndb5! idea. Das verlockende 11...d5 ist für Weiß nicht so unangenehm, wie es auf den ersten Blick scheint, denn nach cxd5 cxd5 gibt es die unangenehme Idee Ndb5! Schwarz dürfte hier glücklich sein.] 16...b5 17.cxb5 I couldn't quite figure out which options are better to allow and which to avoid, as White can also start with Rfd1. Had I started with 17.Rfd1 Black wouldn't have a chance to sacrifice the piece, the way he did in the game, but at the same time, that sacrifice, although interesting is not fully correct. Ich konnte nicht ganz herausfinden, welche Optionen besser zuzulassen und welche zu vermeiden sind, da WeiÃY auch mit Tfd1 beginnen kann. Hätte ich mit 17.Tfd1 begonnen, hätte Schwarz keine Chance gehabt, die Figur zu opfern, wie er es in der Partie tat, aber gleichzeitig ist dieses Opfer, obwohl interessant, nicht ganz korrekt. [17.Rfd1!?] 17...axb5 18.Rfd1 d5!? Understandable practical choice. Probably objectively better is to go for a pawn down endgame with 18...Bh6, but this is not why Pragg had gone for this opening. Eine verständliche praktische Entscheidung. Wahrscheinlich wäre es objektiv besser, mit 18...Lh6 ein Minusbauernendspiel anzustreben, aber deshalb hatte sich Pragg bestimmt nicht für diese ErÃffnung entschieden. [18...Bh6 19.Qxd6 Qxd6 20.Rxd6 Bxf4 21.Rxc6 Black saved some draws here in correspondence chess, but White really holds all the cards in this rather safe endgame. Schwarz hat hier im Fernschach einige Remis gerettet, aber Weiß hat in diesem recht sicheren Endspiel wirklich alle Trümpfe in der Hand.] 19.e5 Nd7 [19...Bf5 This can be nicely neutralized too. Auch das kann gut neutralisiert werden. 20.Qd2 Ne4 21.Bxe4! dxe4 22.Qe1 and with Nd4 and Nxe4 coming, Black doesn't have enough active play. und angesichts von Sd4 und Sxe4 hat Schwarz nicht genug aktives Spiel.] 20.Nd4 The position looked disastrous for Black here, so I realized the piece sac must be Black's point. Die Stellung sah hier katastrophal für Schwarz aus, also erkannte ich, dass das Figurenopfer Schwarz' Pointe sein musste. 20...Ndxe5! Indeed, the only move. Das ist in der Tat der einzige Zug. 21.fxe5 Nxe5 22.Qc2 The strongest move, but actually for a move or two, I later regretted not having chosen the simpler 22.Nxe6!?. Practically this felt cleaner to me, but I (actually correctly) felt that this would sell my advantage too short. The best move here is 27.Nc1! though, which isn't obvious. Ich habe hier aufgehÃrt, weil ich dachte, dass Schwarz gute Remischancen hat, aber später habe ich mich gefragt, warum ich diesen klaren Vorteil für WeiÃY verwarf. Der beste Zug hier ist 27.Sc1!, was aber nicht offensichtlich ist.] 22...Bd7 23.a3?! I started seeing all sorts of resources for Black and decided to look for something clear cut. My initial idea of 23.Nce2 wasn't the best, but the next move I considerd 23.Be2! would actually lead to an objectively near winning advantage. That said, without having an engine by my side, I am not sure how easy it would be to play out this position. For starters you have to see 23.Be2 c5 24.Nb3! which was already not something I had seen.  Now, curiously, the move I made in the game was played in a correspondence game in 2014. Not such a dumb move after all, perhaps. The idea is to lock up Black's counterplay with b4 (not allowing Ra3 after that) and essentially force c5, returning the piece and restoring the material balance, while taking over the initiative. Ich fing an, alle mÃglichen Ressourcen für Schwarz zu sehen, und beschloss, nach etwas Eindeutigem zu suchen. Meine anfängliche Idee 23.Sce2 war nicht die beste, aber der nächste Zug, den ich in Betracht zog, 23.Le2! würde tatsächlich zu einem objektiv nahezu gewinnbringenden Vorteil führen. Abgesehen davon bin ich mir nicht sicher, wie einfach es wäre, diese Stellung ohne eine Engine an meiner Seite auszuspielen. Zunächst einmal muss man 23.Le2 c5 24.Sb3! sehen, was ich schon einmal nicht gesehen hatte.  Seltsamerweise wurde der Zug, den ich in der Partie gemacht habe, in einer Fernzpartie im Jahr 2014 gespielt. Vielleicht ist es doch kein so dummer Zug. Die Idee ist, das Gegenspiel von Schwarz mit b4 zu blockieren (und Ta3 danach nicht zuzulassen) und im Wesentlichen c5 zu erzwingen, die Figur zurückzugeben und das materielle Gleichgewicht wiederherzustellen, während man die Initiative übernimmt. [23.Be2! c5 24.Nb3!] 23...h4? I thought this was a terrible move, but in fact the main mistake came later. The move is still bad. The inclusion of h4-h3 is massively in White's favor, as I get to control the key g4 square, essentially winning a full tempo, pretty much. Ich hielt dies für einen schrecklichen Zug, aber der Hauptfehler kam erst später. Der Zug ist trotzdem schlecht. Die Einschaltung von h4-h3 ist massiv zu Gunsten von WeiÃY, da ich das Schlüsselfeld g4 kontrollieren kann und im Grunde genommen ein volles Tempo gewinne, so ziemlich. [23...c5! 24.Bxd5 cxd4 25.Bxa8 This was the more ambitious attempt, but I was far from sure if I should go into this. Dies war der ehrgeizigere Versuch, aber ich war mir bei weitem nicht sicher, ob ich mich darauf einlassen sollte. (25.Bxd4 Here, compared to the game, White has a much worse version. Black should be able to equalize. Hier hat WeiÃY im Vergleich zur Partie eine viel schlechtere Version. Schwarz sollte in der Lage sein, auszugleichen. 25...Rc8 Black is doing okay here, as White also has to think about Ng4 jump in all the variations. Schwarz steht hier okay, da WeiÃY in allen Varianten auch über den Sg4-Sprung nachdenken muss.) 25...Qxa8 (25...d3!? This gives Black full compensation and was played in the 2014 corr game that ended in a draw. Dies gibt Schwarz volle Kompensation und wurde in der Fernpartie 2014 gespielt, die mit einem Remis endete. 26.Rxd3 Qxa8 27.Rxd7 Nxd7 28.Nxb5 Rb8 29.Nc3 h4 30.h3 Nf6 Black has more or less full compensation for the sacrificed pawn, as White's king shelter isn't complete. Ich habe nicht die ganze Variante gesehen, aber im Allgemeinen hatte ich das Gefühl, dass Schwarz hier ausgezeichnete Kompensation hat.] 24.h3! I considered greedy options too, but returning the piece under even better conditions was very tempting and also best. Ich habe auch über gierige Optionen nachgedacht, aber die Rückgabe der Figur unter noch besseren Bedingungen war sehr verlockend und auch das Beste. 24...c5 I thought that practically Pragg had to look for something, anything else, but in his defense, there really was no good alternative here. Black must regain the piece, otherwise after White gets b4, there will be no compensation left at all. Ich dachte, dass Pragg praktisch nach etwas anderem suchen musste, aber zu seiner Verteidigung, es gab hier wirklich keine gute Alternative. Schwarz muss die Figur zurückgewinnen, sonst gibt es nach WeiÃY' b4 überhaupt keine Kompensation mehr. 25.Bxd5! cxd4 26.Bxd4 The computer also suggests taking with the rook, which didn't occur to me at all. Der Computer schlägt auch vor, mit dem Turm zu nehmen, was mir gar nicht in den Sinn kam. 26...Rb8? Somehow I skipped over this moment, but this was actually the crucial mistake. I think we were both thinking about Qb3 being my next move and so Rb8 unlike Rc8 does the job of protecting the b5 pawn. Instead, however, I now get a very strong move Ne4! which Black had to prevent at all cost with 26...Rc8. Irgendwie habe ich diesen Moment übersprungen, aber das war eigentlich der entscheidende Fehler. Ich glaube, wir dachten beide, dass Db3 mein nächster Zug sein würde, und so übernimmt Tb8 im Gegensatz zu Tc8 die Aufgabe, den b5-Bauern zu schützen. Now White maintains a very powerful initiative in what has transpired to be a risk free position. No fun for Black, but he could still try salvaging a draw here. Dies ist der stärkste Zug. Schwarz ist hier sehr gut im Spiel.) 27...Qe7 28.Rd2 Bc6 29.Rf1 Red8 30.Bc5 Qb7 31.Rfd1 White has a dominant position, but Black is not lost. Weiß hat eine dominante Stellung, aber Schwarz ist nicht verloren.] 27.Ne4! I suddenly noticed this move and started wondering why I am not just winning. In fact I am! Plötzlich bemerkte ich diesen Zug und begann mich zu fragen, warum ich nicht einfach gewinne. Das tue ich tatsächlich! 27...Bg4 This came as a shock. I checked for the bishop moves (Bf5, Bxh3), but forgot to consider this one. It is hard to say whether it is luck or not, that White has a winning reply here, as often in a dominant positions, the tactics somehow do work out, but in either case I was massively relieved to have found a win here. Das kam wie ein Schock. Ich prüfte die Läuferzüge (Lf5, Lxh3), hatte aber diesen nicht auf dem Schirm. Es ist schwer zu sagen, ob es Glück ist oder nicht, dass WeiÃY hier eine gewinnbringende Antwort hat, da in dominanten Stellungen die Taktik oft irgendwie funktioniertt, aber in jedem Fall war ich massiv erleichtert, hier einen Gewinn gefunden zu haben. 28.Bxf7+! There are a lot of captures White could perform, but this is the only winning one. Black tries to pose up some problems, but if White shows some care, there are no tricks at all. Weiß steht völlig auf Gewinn und der Rest war nur noch Formsache. Schwarz versucht, ein paar Probleme zu schaffen, aber wenn Weiß etwas Vorsicht walten lässt, gibt es überhaupt keine Tricks. 34...Re4 35.Bd4 Ne3 One way to complicate the win now would be to go for 35.Qb3+, because after 35...Kh7! 26.Bxe3 Qg3! Black has some tricks up his sleeve. Even less easy to win is 35.Bxg7? Qg3!. After noticing all these tricks, it was easy to determine what the easiest win was. Eine MÃglichkeit, den Sieg jetzt zu erschweren, wäre 35.Db3 , denn nach 35...Kh7! 26.Lxe3 Dg3! hat Schwarz einige Tricks im Ã"rmel. Noch weniger leicht zu gewinnen ist 35.Lxg7? Dg3!. Nachdem ich all diese Tricks bemerkt hatte, war es einfach zu bestimmen, was der einfachste Gewinn war. 36.Bxe3! [36.Qb3+ Kh7! 37.Bxe3 Qg3!;
36.Bxg7? Qg3!] 36...Rxe3 37.Rd3 Not allowing any h3 tricks. Lässt keine h3-Tricks zu. 37...Rg3 38.Rd7 Qf4 39.Qb7 Qf6 40.Re1 With Rxg7 coming, Black had to finally throw in the towel. Angesichts des kommenden Txg7 musste Schwarz schlieÃYlich das Handtuch werfen. 1-0
